Dear Minister

NATIONAL MONUMENTS AND THE GALLOWS MEMORIALISATION PROJECT

Jopie FourieWith reference to the declaration of the gallows in the Pretoria Prison, as a Memorial Museum, please allow me to bring to your attention the tragic events of the 20th December 1914, when Commandant Jopie Fourie was murdered by the then Government of Louis Botha and Jan Smuts for taking up arms against the British Empire. That was during the Rebellion of1914.

Commandant Fourie was condemned to death by firing squad and the sentence was executed in the old section of the Pretoria Prison. The bullet marks were still visible in 1990 when I was detained by the De Klerk Government.

In 2014 we Boers will recall this sad incident. If the Gallows is open to the public, my humble request is that the spot where Jopie Fourie died, be treated in the same manner and to be declared a National Monument and open to the public.

For your kind consideration please. Your reply is being awaited in anticipation.

Yours faithfully

Piet Rudolph
